Art + Activism:
Music against Repression
Colombia occupies the infamous first place as the country in the world where most people are killed for standing up against the destruction of nature and defending human rights.
Thanks to the support of York University’s Center for Applied Human Rights and the Open Society Foundation we were able to carry out this process: we interviewed several environmental and social activists in the south of Colombia, then transcribed the interviews with the Resonar Lab team and used data visualization software to identify the most significant themes and concepts. With this information we invited a group of socially committed musicians to create songs that would make this situation visible in order to engage a diverse audience in the discussion.
Activism through music
THEY ARE KILLING US includes footage shot during protests in Bogota and Berlin against Colombian State repression. It was made in collaboration with filmmakers, musicians, artists and activists from both cities.
GETTING BY was co-produced between Colombia and Germany as a narrative of how the interviewed activists survive with creativity and courage in these difficult times.
ORIGIN was co-produced between Argentina, Colombia and Germany. We narrate musically how the activists interviewed understand and construct their identity critically, in opposition to the prejudices and difficulties they face.
